Sears Treadmill Guide
While at the mall, many people stumble upon sears treadmills, usually while shopping for other household items like power tools, appliances or electronics.
Should you buy a Sears treadmill? The answer to that question depends on what type of treadmill you need for exercise.
Sears treadmills range from the absurdly cheap - like the Proform 495 treadmill at $400 - all the way up to the new Nordic Track Viewpoint Treadmill.
One thing you'll notice about the Sears treadmill line-up, is that they gear their treadmill selection toward the lower end of the price range.
You'll find a range of models from Proform ( 495, Crosswalk, 400, Crosswalk Advanced, and 542 treadmill). They range inprice from $399 for the Proform 495, up to $699 for the Proform 542 treadmill.
The Proform Sears treadmills are entry level, and should only be considered by people that need a very basic machine for light walking.
If you're willing to invest a bit more for a better treadmill, Sears offer some nice models from Nordic Track including the NordicTrack C2050, N2050, C2270, C2420, E3000 and the NordicTrack Viewpoint at the top end.
NordicTrack treadmill models at Sears are better machines than the Proform models. They have larger more powerful motors, better cushioning, nicer displays and stronger frames.
If you're going to buy a Sears treadmill, please do some homework before you go, as some of the sales staff in the fitness area may not have all the answers you need.
Here's a link directly to the Sears Treadmill area of their online store.
As always, if you have any questions about shopping for a Sears treadmill, please post a comment or go to my main website and get all the free information you need to make

Hi Brett,
In Canada, Sears has a treadmill brand called "Free Spirit" which is made specifrically for them. They are slightly lower priced than the Nordic Track.
Have you heard of them and can you give me your thoughts on what quality I can expect? I tried them and they seem ok.
\\Jack D Nimble
Jack,
I did some digging on the free spirit treadmill models from Sears.
It's unclear to me who manufacturs "free spirit treadmills". There is a company that makes treadmills called "Spirit" - and they make really nice equipment.
As far as whether or not you should buy a free spirit treadmill or a Nordic Track...I would talk to someone at Sears and try to find out who makes them.
If the free spirit treadmills are made by Spirit or another reputable company, then go for it.
Otherwise you will be better off getting a name brand treadmill from a company that has some experience in design and construction that will stand behind their product.

We are replacing our Lifestyler Expanse 2000 that we bought at Sears in 1994. After multiple extended warranties, they can no longer obtain the replacement parts it needs. We are looking at the NordicTrack C2420; it will be used by my wife, our 13 year old son, and me. My wife will do "power walking," our son will run, and I'll do both (my wife and I are in our late 40's, and all three of us are physically fit and active). It will get regular use. Does the NordicTrack C2420 seem appropriate for our level of use?
Dave
Hi Dave,
The Nodric Track c2420 is a solid choice, but for your purposes you may want to consider a heavier duty treadmill around the $2000 dollar range.
Take a look at the Nordic Track c2420 and put it up against similar models from Sole, Smooth and Spirit and see how it compares.
If you haven't seen my review picks by price range you can go to the main site www.treadmill-tips.com and click on reviews.

Hi Brett,
I have found your site enlightening. I have one quick question. I am deciding between two treadmills at the moment, the Nordic Track E3000 and C2420. I am 6'3" and approximately 225lbs. I plan on using it for running at and above 7mph, around 5 times a week. My girlfriend also uses it to walk 2-3 times a week. I have recently returned a C2000 because it just couldnt handle me running on it. Your thoughts? Thank you
As I mentioned to Dave in an earlier post, if you are going to be using your treadmill a lot and are heavier, it makes sense to shop for a treadmill in the higher price range.
Treadmills like the Nordic Track E3000 are good treadmills, but they may not be able to take the punishment that a treadmill like the Sole S75 which I consider to be a great value even at around $1999.
You can see all my picks on my treadmill reviews page by following checking out the right hand navigation where it says "treadmill reviews".

THis is anonymous from above about that E3000 and C2420. I am kind of stuck in a hard place since I have returned the treadmill to Sears, I can only exchange. I was looking at the E3000, I cant find any reviews on it. I just want to know if it will last. From your comments, I am guessing no. I have decided against the C2420, and I am only interested in if I am throwing my money away on the E3000. Your thoughts? Thanks.
Based on what you said about your intended use and your physical size, I can't in good conscience tell you to get a Nordic Track E3000.
Nordic Track does make good equipment, but any treadmill under about $1700-$2000 (depending on the manufacturer) is not meant for heavy continuous use by larger people, that's just reality.
I'm sorry that's prbably not what you wanted to hear, but if I were you i would invest that money from your Sears treadmill return for your house, then save up and get a treadmill more suited to your needs.

Bret,
Great site! I'm shopping for my first home treadmill. I've been running for only about 1 year, and need one @ home to prevent the excuse of letting the weather get in the way! FWIW, I'm 5'8", 190 lbs (dropped 60 lbs in 1 year so far...another 30 soon). I'll be running 3-5x/week, my wife will be walking 3-5x/week.
I went to Sears and looked at the NordicTrack ViewPoint Treadmill. It's $2,199 (+ $50 shipping). While it does come w/a lifetime warranty on the motor, it's only 1 year on parts & labor. They want another $325 for a 3 year full service warranty ($478 for 5 years).
1. Do I need the additional warranty?
2. Is this a good buy, or should I keep looking?
3. I (sort of) like the idea of the TV built in, so I don't need to buy one to put near by. Is this just too gimmicky?
4. It has some sort of adjustible shock absorbsion system. Again, just a gimmick, or is it useful?
5. Lastly, what the heck is iFit? Another gimmick?
Thanks so much for your help!

Paul,
Glad to hear that you like the website.
Like I mentioned in earlier posts, if I were going to spend $2000 on a treadmill, I would have my sites set on one model and that's the Sole s75 treadmill.
Go to my treadmill review page which can be found in the upper right navigation of the blog, or just go to www.treadmill-tips.com and read the entire site that explains exactly what to look for in a treadmill for your home.
If you have any more questions, get back to me.

hello,
Just to let you know that the free spirit treadmills sold at sears like the free spirit club series is made by trimline. They are exactly the same, they just change the badge.I have one and got it at least $500.00 cheaper than the fitness centers and thats including the 5 year extended service agreement. When I started using it I weighed 330 lbs and am now down to 270lbs and this machine is great.I paid it $2200.00 in Canada and its worth every cent!
Thanks ..The G-man
Hi Brett,
Love your site, I found it very informative.
I just wanted to see what you think. Today I bought my first treadmill. I do have to admit, I did do the 'Sears thing.' I think you may understand when you hear what I got and what I paid for it.
I ended up buying the Nordic Track E4400. We looked around at quite a few treadmills, we even went to high quality stores. I just cringed at paying so much for a better brand name but by buying an expensive brand they had fewer features, smaller horsepower, etc.
The E4400 has a 3.0 continuous motor, the treadbelt is 20" x 60" and the cushioning is what really sold me on it, I've read a lot today about Nordic Track's cushioning and everything I've read has been positive.
The machine was last years model. Because of this, and because it was the last one, we only paid $749! (they are delivering it for an additon of only $49) I have found it online tonight no cheaper than $1999. It had just been marked down to this price today, yesterday it was $1200. Also, when this treadmill was the 'new' model, it sold for more. I am 5'6", female and average build. I've gained quite a bit of weight this year but I'm still very average in size. I used to workout daily, during the last year, well... I had pretty much stopped (hence the weight gain)
I plan on using the treadmill mainly for walking. I wanted something easy on my joints, some of the workouts that I love to do put too much pressure on my joints and I wanted this for days when I am going to take it easy.
I will use it for 60 minutes, mainly walking, but possibly for SOME jogging intervals.
For this price range, and for me being pretty much the only user, and considering I'll mainly be walking, I couldn't see paying more for a better brand....what do you think?
Thanks so much for any insight!
Glad to hear you like the site!
I'd say you found yourself one heck of a deal at Sears on your Nordic Track E4400.
Under Normal circumstances, you'll find better prices online for treadmills.
Get going on your new treadmill and watch the pounds and fat start coming off.
Way to go!
Bret
i have no idea where to start. should i purchase a proform (cross trainer, 1.3 chp) for 599 at sears OR for 1100, i can get a free spirit with a 2.0 chp motor. i weight 190, and will be running everyday, 45 mins, at 7.5-9.5 m/hr.
with proform, i checked out their sites. with free spirit - i have no idea who makes their product. am concern, as the proform might not be what i need. please share with me your thoughts/insight
am the guy who posted the last msg; well, i am about to head to sears to get a 'freeform 2.5 chp club treadmill'. i think am getting a real, real good deal. does anyone know anything or have any suggestions on this?
I don't see the "freeform" treadmill on their website?
Are you getting a Proform model?
If so, what model is it?
Bret
opps. sorry. it's the 'free spirit 2.5 hp club series'. thank you so much for having this forum and site. i read so much info from here, and this gave me a lot of insight into what i wanted to buy. i am very happy with the purchase. it will be delivered next week. thank you again.
freestyle is made by trimline (thanks to the info on this site). the model i had purchased is the trimline t350 2.5 chp. i am so excited. it has a 3 years/motor canadian warrantee, and 10 on the frame i think. it is listed at 1799 regular, but since they are phasing out this model for the newer t380 (3.0 chp). i got it for 1495, with a 10% off on a saturday/sunday special, plus another 10% for the floor model. happy running friends. cordially, pvt
I am looking for a treadmill. I am looking at either the Sears Nordic Trac C2270 or an Ironman 320T Teadmill, which is on Wal-Mart.com. I am a 330 lbs lady who is looking to start walking 1-4 miles a day. With my weight, would I be better off going to the gym at $30/month -- or going ahead with one of these tradmill purchases? Thanks for your help!
Hi Brett,
Are you tired of questions re: Sears Treadmills yet? I am happy that I came across your site as it is very informative for me, a first time treadmill buyer (hopefully) - however I'd like your opinion if possible.
My husband and I are looking for a treadmill that will be suitable for both of us. Neither of us run worth a darn, but as I lose weight and become fit jogging is certainly something I could forsee myself taking up.
We are both just below the 350lb mark and have been looking at the Nordictrack E3000 Limited Ed. available at Sears (we're in Canada).
Do you believe this would be a good investment given our current weight? As much as we are trying not to let price guide us in our decision, we only have so much money to put towards this purchase and the $2000 (approx - Cnd Dollars) mark is pretty close to our max.
The other we have considered is the Bodyguard T260...however have not seen one as the closest vendor is a few hours away.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to offer me.
Les
Hey Brett, thanks for the informative site.
You have confirmed what I learned from my limited research prior to our first time treadmill purchase.
We need to spend approx. $2000.00 for a treadmill to fit our needs.
Am 290lb male doing rehab from a knee injury. Can only walk now, will jog in a few months. Spouse is 160lb walker.
Was considering Nordic Track E3000 at local Sears, sale price $1499.00
Stumbled onto Nordic Track Apex 8000 online for $1500.00 which looks to be a way better deal. Any feedback regarding the 2 units?

Hi Brett,
My boyfriend and I are looking to buy a treadmill. We both are in our mid-late 20's and plan on running (6-9 mph) for 30-60 minutes 5 times a week. We are kind of on a budget and are looking at the NordicTrack model C220 from Sears. Would this be a good choice. I am very nervous about getting a treadmill and it having a bunch of problems. Please help!!!
Hey there...great site!
I am also giving serious thought to buying a treadmill. I can get a Nordic Track C2000 for about $900(reg. $1800 CAN) at a Sears Outlet in the area.
I intend to run on it. I am a 5'9" male weighing in at a range of 150 - 170 lbs, depending on my schedule.
Here is what I would love to hear: that is a great buy! Great treadmill! Enjoy the run. What do you think? (How about extended warranties? In your experience with Nordic Track treadmills, do you recommend them?)
(I have looked up and down this site in search of this info. I have read your recommendations, but I was hoping for your thoughts as they pertained specifically to this model.) Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you
To those who inquired regarding the Canadian Sears "Free Spirit" Treadmills, I have a 2.0 hp cd Free Spirit and it gets daily fast walking use by me for three years. I stand at 6'4" and 250 lbs and have a heavy walk. No problems with the thing at all I was told to go at least 2.0 continous duty in the horsepower range. Sears offers a thirty year warranty on the motor- I'm not sure of the deck.
The sales people uniformly told me that the Free Spirit mills offered much better bang for the buck then the Nordic Trac models on sale by them, had far fewer problems with them and felt they were a better product. Tread replacement/maintenance is cheaper too.
If you stay at 2.0 hp cd or above with the Free Spirit and you weigh less than I do, then I would recommend them for daily use.
Hi Brett,
In South Africa, there are few options as far as treadmills go. There are a few lower end pro forms, nordic track 2420 and 2050 and then a few brands called Proteus and Ali Life which I have never heard of. Therefore, my options are minimal. My husband and I are 110 and 170 lbs respectively. We run an hour each about 4-5 days a week. Do you think either of the Nordic Tracks will hold up for that or do you think it is not a wise investment.
